Best European cities for tech workers in 2026
A decision framework for software engineers, data scientists, ML researchers, and engineering leaders choosing between Europe’s deepest tech hubs.
The six cities that matter in 2026
Narrow ranges are indicative, for a mid-senior (5–8 years) software engineer, 2026. Confirm against your specific offer and level.
- Munich — €85k–120k gross. Employers: Google, Apple, Celonis, Personio, BMW, Siemens, Allianz. Expensive rent, excellent transit.
- Berlin — €65k–95k gross. Employers: Zalando, Delivery Hero, N26, Trade Republic, HelloFresh, plus the deepest startup scene in Germany.
- Zurich — CHF 130k–170k gross (CHF 170k–230k+ for senior IC4/staff). Employers: Google Zurich, Meta, Microsoft, UBS, credit-card and payment infrastructure.
- Stockholm — SEK 700k–1,100k gross. Employers: Klarna, Spotify, King, Northvolt, Truecaller, Voi, Einride. 25% Expertskatt for qualifying specialists.
- Lisbon — €50k–80k gross for local hires, substantially more for remote employees paid from abroad. NHR 2.0 regime. Cost of living ~half of Zurich.
- Amsterdam — €75k–110k gross. Employers: Booking.com, Adyen, Mollie, Miro, Uber EU. 30% ruling tapered reform in progress.
Where should you land?
A simple tree we walk founders and engineers through on discovery calls:
- Senior IC chasing comp? → Zurich, then Basel for pharma tech, then Munich.
- Generalist mid-level in a growing career? → Munich or Stockholm.
- Remote employee on a US contract? → Lisbon on D8 under NHR 2.0.
- Startup founder or early employee? → Berlin or Stockholm.
- Fintech or payments specifically? → Amsterdam or Zurich.
Visa access
Germany, Sweden, and the Netherlands issue Blue Cards above the national salary threshold. Portugal uses D7 (passive income) and D8 (remote income) visas. Switzerland is employer-sponsored only, with quotas. Full breakdown in our 2026 visa guide.
The honest tradeoff
European tech outside Switzerland does not match US FAANG cash compensation in 2026. It does match on total quality of life for most people — six weeks of vacation, subsidized childcare, public healthcare, and walkable cities. If total-comp parity is the goal, Zurich and Basel are the only cities worth the comparison; if life quality is the goal, Munich, Stockholm, and Lisbon all clear the bar.
Moving the physical pieces
Our city spokes (rentmunich.com, rentstockholm.com, rentzurich.com among others) cover the local mechanics — Anmeldung, Personnummer, Einwohnerkontrolle, NIF. The move itself runs through our ISO 9001:2015 certified partner Smoover, pan-European. One inquiry covers all ten cities in our network.
Tech workers in Europe — FAQ (2026)
- Which European city pays tech workers the most in 2026?
- Zurich, by a margin. Senior software engineers commonly earn CHF 170,000–230,000 gross with 5–7 year experience, with the lowest effective tax of any tech hub on this list. Basel follows for ML and pharma-adjacent tech. Munich leads the German market; Stockholm leads the Nordic market.
- Is Lisbon good for remote tech workers?
- Yes, particularly on a D8 digital-nomad visa. NHR 2.0 offers a flat 20% tax on qualifying innovation roles for up to 10 years, and cost of living is roughly half of Zurich. The local ecosystem depth is smaller than Munich or Stockholm, so it suits remote employees and founders more than people wanting to change roles frequently.
- Where is the best European tech scene for senior engineers?
- Munich (Google, Apple, BMW ConnectedDrive, Siemens, Celonis, Personio) and Stockholm (Klarna, Spotify, Northvolt, King, Voi) are the deepest markets for senior ICs. Zurich is excellent for senior Google, Meta, and financial-systems engineers. Amsterdam covers fintech and marketplace roles well.
- What visa do tech workers usually use?
- The EU Blue Card covers most qualified tech hires in Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden, and other EU markets above the salary threshold. Switzerland requires employer-sponsored B permits with quota. Portugal uses the D8 digital-nomad visa. Full breakdown in our visa guide.
- Do European tech salaries match US levels after tax?
- Rarely in Germany or Sweden. Sometimes in Switzerland for senior ICs and staff-level engineers. The quality-of-life gap (healthcare, childcare, public transit) usually closes the gap further, but expect a 20–50% net pay cut moving from FAANG compensation in the US to a non-Swiss European market.
